Skagen watches have a pretty unique birth. Many moons ago, in the year 1986, Henrik Jorst and Charlotte Kjolbye found themselves, and each other, at a corporate party and fell in love. It was no less than love at first sight. However, a little while later Henrik's employers, Carlsberg, transferred him to New York in order to become the manager of the North American marketing branch. Soon, Charlotte followed in his footsteps and wound up in New York as well, where they rediscovered each other.
One of Henrik's Danish pals sent him samples of his company gift watches. He wanted to know if there was a possible market for them in the United States. Going off of the samples, they added their own tweaks, and made the watches a fashion piece. Much to their surprise, corporate buyers adored the designs, and recommended that the couple sell these watches under a brand name as opposed to just selling them to companies stamped with the company's logo.
Jorst and Kjolbye manufactured no less than eight hundred watches in four special designs with the brand name "Skagen Denmark." The couple was extremely passionate about the designs of their watches, and they claimed that they knew exactly what people wanted when buying a watch. The first load of Skagen watches quickly flew off the shelves, and they promptly ordered more. In the next year, Henrik and Charlotte created thirty new watch designs. One particular buyer who owned a mail order catalog took a risk and put Skagen watches on the back of the Father's Day edition, where they quickly sold out again.
Later on in the year 1995, Bloomingdales agreed to sell the Skagen watches on a trial basis. Every single watch was sold by the end of the day. Skagen Designs was featured in an article in Inc. magazine where it was among the top 250 fastest growing private corporation in the United States. In the period of five years, turnover had gone up by 1200 percent. Eighty stores in Denmark were now selling the watches after a new office opened to create ECU distribution.
In 1995, the United Kingdom was being sold Skagen watches and Skagen Denmark now had almost 100 employees working for it. Many other countries jumped on the bandwagon in 2000 and began to sell the watches as well, including Germany and the Netherlands. This line of watches had made huge strides in the industry and had grown to an enormous company with 160 employees and sixty markets world wide. Over 250 unique watch designs are now available with over 5000 stores all over the globe.
